“Rustic gem in idyllic spot”
Set on a hillside gently sloping down to a serene river, this resort has a special atmosphere quite different from any of the many other places my wife and I have stayed in over years of visiting Thailand. You might lay your head, as we did for our first several days, in a large corner room with a big terrace overlooking both the said waterway and the sea just a few hundred yards along. Or, as we did towards the end of our stay, you might choose a slightly more expensive circular high-ceilinged room in a hut with whitewashed walls and a conical thatched roof boasting a private plunge pool facing the mountains. Both rooms were wonderful. The beds were comfy, the showers, the TV and the wifi worked well, and some of the fittings had an idiosyncratic charm. Staff were kind, helpful and easy to communicate with. I enjoyed the two swimming pools, especially the one on the upper level which offered some shade. The generous breakfasts were very good with a fine variety of offerings and comfortable seating. A small private ferry which on demand shuttles guests to and from the resort's private sandy beach was a big plus. Said beach has a great little bar pumping out chill vibes and a restaurant which was good and reasonably priced - though do beware of the Thai sand midge! It is fair to say, as some reviewers have, that there are a few ‘rough edges’ (eg some of the wooden members of the extensive walkways linking various areas of the resort have seen better days) but these are minor matters and I found most simply added to the rustic charm of the environment. It is also true that there are a lot of steps - yet as someone in my 70s who is in a pretty clapped out state I found it easy to take them in my stride. One suggestion I would make, though, is for more strips of white paint on areas of decking warning of changes of level; after nightfall, there is potential for tripping. I don’t ordinarily write reviews of this length nor ‘gush’ - but the Aana hit the spot for me.
