Lille is a nice city with many historical buildings esp. Lille Grand Place and great shopping. Grand Place has a Printemps, Galleries Lafayette as well as many small fashion boutiques.
Lille is a handy place to start out on your first visit to France, not a big as Paris. It is also a good place to start or finish a Battlefield Tour.
A very nice city center, very flemish-y: a mix of Amsterdam and Paris. The people are said to be the friendliest in France.
