“Moldy door frame, bathroom ventilation fan not working”
Japanese room Checked in late evening, less than 10 degrees outdoors. Family of 3 took turns for a hot shower. After showering, noticed excessive amount of condensation on the plastic ceiling, the 4 walls and even the door. Checked the ventilation fan and realised it is not working. Called the front desk, unable to communicate properly as the staff is only able to speak very little English. The staff came up to the room and we communicate using google translate. Used a piece of tissue to prove to him that the ventilation fan is totally not working as the tissue is not even moving. The staff tried to convince me that the system is working and all the hot air will be sucked to the roof top. Told him that there is no evidence to support his claim as the tissue paper does not even move when placed right at the ventilation fan. How can there be no movement if there is any kind of air suction? Staff replied that it is difficult to show evidence that their system is working. Realised that i am fighting a losing battle, i thank the staff for coming up and spent the next 20mins cleaning the ceiling. The hand towel turned pink and brown, which is evidence of the airborne bacteria Serratia marcescens and mildew. Spend another 10mins to hand wash the hand towel. Moved all the towel out of the bathroom and hang them to dry in the room as i will be showering and using the towel again in the morning. On the 2nd day, realised that the wooden door frame behind the door has black mold. Most Japanese hotel has very low ceiling and no windows, thus it is normal to have condensation and for the silicon grouting to have some mold but this is the first time i have encountered a bathroom where the ventilation fan is not working. This is also the first time where i see such a big area of black mold on the door frame. Makes you wonder what is the management doing. Location review: Location is quite decent. The lift exit from Shijo subway is 30 seconds away from the hotel. Shijo subway is also connected to the hankyu line which is an added bonus. If you like walking, it is around 20mins walk to the entrance of the Gion area. Staff review: Not one but most of the staff are more attentive and polite to Japanese customers. I am not someone who is particular about service but the clear distinction makes me uncomfortable. If Japanese customers can provide you with enough business, then why do you bother to accept international bookings? I stayed at 4 hotels during this trip and i gave good reivews for the other 3 hotels. Agoda is my witness.
