Beautiful Oasis”
This may be my favorite boutique hotel in all of Thailand. The architecture is stunning, the facilities are exceedingly clean, and the staff is super helpful and polite. The location in the old city is also excellent. There is a good variety of set breakfast menus to choose from, with both Thai and Western breakfasts available. It would be nice to be able to make your own breakfast item selections, rather than rely on set menus, but this is a small quibble which should not distract from the overall goodness of the Makka. The rooms are beautifully decorated in dark wood floors, Persian carpets, and antique furniture. The rooms and hallways are decorated with inspirational messages, probably of Buddhist origin. The ambience of the Makka is quiet and meditative (unless of course you have a mainland Chinese family with kids in the surrounding rooms as I did). There is no swimming pool, fitness center or other similar amenities, but this is a boutique hotel after all. The hotel is only a couple of years old, and so many taxi drivers will not recognize the name. It is best to have the address and a map loaded on your cell phone or tablet to ensure you get to the hotel withiut undue confusion. If what you were looking for is a beautiful room in a beautiful hotel with a friendly staff and good location, I can't think of a better choice in Chang Mai.

Elegant modern Hotel with artistic design”
Though our driver needed his cell phone to find this cool spot in the Old City, we indeed did locate the Makka in a quiet alley within walking distance of many attractions and restaurants. We were both taken aback on passing through the gated entry by the modern design that pulled in traditional architectural elements for the lobby (dark wood, cathedral ceiling Thai house style) and lounge/library (mirroring the lobby but all white). Our room (101) was on the ground floor of the main building on a corner allowing for plenty of light and access to a private garden and sitting area. Breakfasts were very nice with choices of Western and Thai options. You also have a choice of eating off the garden or up a flight of stairs off the library in the morning light. The front desk was very helpful, whether setting up dinner reservations or a taxi to the train, (e.g. they wrote out the name and address of the restaurant in Thai for the driver.) The hotel does not provide a mosquito net for the bed so do not leave your screen door to the garden open or you may need to hunt down the occasional stray bug. And due to the lovely dark wood floors, the sound of heavy foot steps of those staying upstairs may be heard but this was a minor issue for us. Up in the open air lounge/library can be found shelves of self help/motivational books, so depending on your state of mind on arriving in Chiang Mai, this may a spot to curl up, breath deeply and seek a mental comfort zone...but then again you might just head out into the day and expose yourself to unique views of the world and new horizon lines.

Comfort in the Old City”
The Makka Hotel is a quaint, beautifully designed hotel that is situated in the heart of the Old City in Chiang Mai. The rooms are sophisticated, clean and well suited for couples and small families. The staff is very welcoming, warm and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend staying at the Makka Hotel to anyone visiting Chiang Mai.

A Pleasant Sanctuary”
The Makka is a serene oasis in the midst of the chaos of Chiangmai's inner city. The architecture is really beautiful. The staff was always pleasant and helpful. Although the floors are hardwood, I was never bothered by noise from other units, apart from some very loud Chinese children who were allowed by their parents to do as they pleased. It is hard to fault the Makka for these undisciplined kids, but it would be nice if the staff encouraged such guests to maintain the peace and calm of the hotel which was clearly designed to be a place of quite relaxation. The only other thing of note was the fact that taxis did not seem to know where this hotel was, so be prepared with the address. Nor was taxi service readily available at the hotel, though its proximity to the old city might make that irrelevant for most travelers. This is a boutique hotel with no pool or bar, and limited other services. Having no need for anything else, I would stay at the Makka anytime I came to Chiangmai.

Beautiful, peaceful, serene”
This is my second time at the Makka Hotel, and I just love it! The architecture is so beautiful, and the atmosphere is so peaceful. Such a relaxing place to be after a busy day of sightseeing in Chiang Mai. The breakfast is amazing too! Except they use honey instead of syrup for the pancakes, so don’t make the same mistake I did of ordering that. Most of the staff here are so kind and courteous, but there was one staff member that was decidedly not so. Particularly during breakfast, he was very surly, and negligent, guess he is not a morning person. Despite this poor service, I would still return again and again. Oh, and there are a lot of mosquitos, but the hotel does provide mosquito repellant.

Loved it!”
Makka hotel is the nicest place to stay when visiting Chiangmai. Located in the heart of the old town you are just minutes away from all the restaurants, bars and spas. Despite the location close to the buzzing whirls of the city, one will enjoy the relaxing tranquility of the place. Also it‘s beautifully designed. The breakfast is served on the patio - a lovely way to start the day since you will only hear the birds and the sounds of the little fountain in the inner court yard. The staff is super nice and helpful. I have no idea why some reviews describe them as impolite or even rude. I have not experienced such a thing! I highly recommend to make yourself familiar with Thai/South East Asian culture before booking a trip. You cannot and should not compare Western/European culture & behaviour to the Thai culture. People usually are shy + respectful. Also they will always try to avoid conflicts. So please try to be more understanding when visiting Asia.

Comfortable, unique and staff”
This was my second stay at Makka. Small boutique hotel located discreetly off the main road in the old city. Close to 2 big temples and walking distance to night market held on Sunday's. The rooms are unique in old setting yet new and clean, nice comfortable bed spacious, bathroom big but shower with hot water needs to be upgraded. Breakfast is ala carte but sufficient with different menu selection. Staff are great, pleasant, helpful, attentive. Parking is limited. No other amenities like swimming pool or fitness for the price but this is a boutique hotel. Getting very popular with foreign tourist. Only draw back is the no shoes policy in rooms but my slippers kept getting nicked by other guests I guess since they were bigger. I will recommend this hotel, no regrets.

Nice stay of style in old Lanna city of Chiang Mai”
We spent two days over the week end at the Makka, Lanna stylished hotel in the center of the old city of Chiang Mai. Breakfast set are very nice and we had more than enough in thai or western food. We took a large room, very quiet and well arranged. The staff is professional, efficient and discreet, maybe a little smile and friendly chat would make it even better.

i'm giving full points to this little gem...”
...because the architecture, the location, the staff, are so great and my stay was so relaxing. So I will be a bit harsh on the the two points where I think this hotel fails very badly and, if amended, would make it really perfect: As pointed by many others, the morning breakfast is really poor. On the first day I picked Thai Breakfast, and it was the worst Thai food I ever had in Thailand. You expect to feel the fragrance of fresh Thai herbs in food you eat in Chiang Mai: in this breakfast, it seems they only put salt - and a lot of it. Even the soup was salty. Besides, the coffee was watery and grainy. It's hard to accept that a coffee at a classy restaurant is far worse than the one you can get at home with an Espresso machine - even harder in Chiang Mai, one of the coffee capitals of Asia. Another point that can be easily improved is the quality of the toiletry: in the land of Home Spa that gave birth to great brands such as Hard or Thann, an hotel should do much more than just offering average motel-like shower gel and shampoo. It wouldn't take much to sign a deal with a Home Spa shop in town and to have their products. I repeat: I was totally overwhelmed by the full experience at this hotel - so much that I have just tried to book a room for my next stay - that is the only reason why I wanted to point out two easy-to-solve problems even at risk of being a bit harsh. Thank you again for the great stay!

Makka Hotel is a great boutique hotel”
Thanks to Agoda. I chose Makka hotel based on real time reviews from Agoda users. Makka hotel - rooms, cleanliness is excellent. The design is antique boutique design. The breakfast between 6 am to 1 2 noon is so excellent. I actually prefer to eat in the hotel than outside of the hotel. Fabulous stay. I am definitely going back to Makka Hotel

Outer beauty”
This thoughtfully designed and well-built property is both pleasing to the eye and a modern take on Lanna style. Despite being in a soi across from the significant Wat Chedi Luang in full festival mode, the hotel was quiet... indeed peaceful. White plaster against dark wood floors is dramatic, but wood floors creak so consider a room upstairs. Late sleepers: use the Do Not Disturb signs as the cleaning staff are an eager lot. Breakfast sensibly ends at midday. Chiang Mai is a delight, even more so when staying at the Makka.

Lovely boutique hotel with character rarely seen”
It is a hidden gem in the old town of Chiang Mai. We stayed at the superior room with a small garden outside the room. The garden is tiny but we think its a nice touch and cute. Helpful staff and breakfast is the best Thai meal we have had in Chiang Mai! Choose the Thai fried rice and you won't regret. Room is comfortably spacious and bathroom is clean and neat. AC maybe slightly weak throughout the night and shower water not strong enough but overall a pleasant stay. There is a lovely tasteful library above the dining room, we could easily spend hours there since it is so breezy and peaceful up there. The only thing is it doesn't come with a pool but if you have more than 2 nights in Chiang Mai, try one night there (and maybe U Chiang Mai another).

Hidden Jewel in Chaing Mai”
If there were more stars I would gladly give them.... This hotel is absolutely (and overwhelmingly) beautiful and cozy. I would have never thought from the picture how quintessentially wonderful it was staying at this hotel. My boyfriend and I were upset we didn't stay longer to just enjoy the serenity you get from it. Extremely well cleaned (you literally see people always cleaning and polishing the wood), the restaurant has a beautiful view into a small garden and fountain with very unique decorations. The staff (from the kitchen to reception) were always very willing to help and welcoming. Location is perfect as it's in the Old Town so everything very close. This place made our trip to Thailand even more eventful, I would return to Chiang Mai just for this little hidden jewel in the middle of no where.... and by the way you must sit a read some bit in the Library (it's an experience you must have if you stay at the hotel) Love, Love, Love it!!!!!!

Clean and Convenient hotel at great location.”
Although it was a little difficult to find the hotel, since it was located at a very small Soi, but when we saw the front of this hotel, we were very pleased. The design was breath taking. A mixture of both old and new architect presented here. Staff was extremely helpful and polite. We were requested to take of shoes downstairs before going upstairs to our rooms. Best idea to keep rooms clean and healthy. Hotel amenities were good. Although bathroom was small, but shower was great. Very clean and quiet place to stay. Breakfast was excellent. Great hotel located at this busy part of Chiang Mai.

Terrific location, design and most of all SERVICE ”
Absolutely satisfied. Great design hotel in the old city of Chiang Mai. Outstanding service and very friendly and supporting staff. Breakfast with a beautiful smile, absolutely like to go back for. Best hotel in Thailand so far. Not all know how to find this best kept secret of Chiang Mai, and maybe it is better to keep it that way ;)

Everything is absolutely okay with Makka. Location and service are outstanding. Staff provided very good support to make arrangements with local companies. Breakfast is served with a lovely smile, and only this smile will make you decide to go back to this lovely place in Chiang Mai.

we fell in love with the makka. in fact, we got engaged here! the hotel is designed like no other, everything has been meticulously thought out and there is an immaculate attention to detail. the hotel boosts peace, serenity and tranquility. there is a breezy and heavenly upstairs library where you can sit, relax and listen to the birds. style with substance, the hotel is suitable for couples, families and business travellers looking for a special place to call home during your stay. hotel is very clean, food is excellent and the staff are friendly and attentive. we came back to the hotel on a rainy night and the staff came out to meet us with umbrellas by the taxi. location is fantastic, it's within walking distance to temples, local eateries, yoga schools and the famous weekend markets. we can't wait to come back again.

friendly and helpful staff, nicely designed hotel”
We just loved the unique traditional architecture of this new hotel. At the same time the location was just perfect to discover the city, its sights, restaurants and night life by foot - everything seems to be just around the corner. The hotel staff was extremely friendly and helpful at any time; breakfast was served until 12.00 a.m. (!). Very convenient was the free wireless internet connection in the room in order to stay in touch with the world outside Chiang Mai. Highly recommendable.
