“Comparing 5 star with. 5 star hotels ”
I am writing this review by comparing The Westin Xi’an with other Westin and comparable five-star hotels I have stayed at across China, Japan, Korea, Europe, and the United States. First, let me make one thing very clear: the staff are excellent. They are hardworking, professional, and genuinely welcoming. Many of them speak good English, and housekeeping was efficient—I returned from breakfast between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. to find my room already cleaned. The hotel’s location is also a strong plus. What disappoints me most, however, are the physical aspects of the hotel. Many areas feel old and worn. The mattress in my room had clearly sunken in, and the bed linens lacked the plushness one expects from a Westin—feeling overwashed and ironed too many times. The same applies to the bath towels, which felt gritty rather than soft and fluffy. The bathroom also showed visible signs of ageing. The toilet area was dimly lit, the grouting on the marble walls had yellowed, and parts of the once-white marble had discoloured, giving the space a slightly tired and decaying appearance. The room itself felt cramped, largely due to an oversized business desk positioned in the middle. It occupied valuable floor space that would have been far more useful for opening luggage comfortably. I was also assigned a room facing a public thoroughfare, where music and crowd noise were clearly audible. While the noise subsided around 11:00 p.m., on that particular night I had hoped to sleep earlier and was unable to do so. Breakfast was average. For a hotel of this standing, I would have expected a proper coffee machine rather than a Nespresso setup. To be clear, I am not being critical for the sake of criticism. I would gladly give five stars for the hotel’s location and the professionalism of its staff. However, the property itself is in need of a refresh—new mattresses, linens, and bath towels would be a good start. Overall, the hotel would greatly benefit from an urgent makeover… pun fully intended.
